KENYAN GOVERNMENT ERECT OBSTACLES FOR UNMARRIED NOT TO MARRY

By Chris Ojow

A Kenyan lawyer has challenged the

decision of the Government to raise fees

of acquiring vital documents legally

required by law for a citizen to posses.

In the application filed before High

Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi, the

applicant Fredrick Bikeri is challenging

the orders of the State as punitive and

injustice to the suffering Kenyan

Citizens.

The gazette notices released and dated

November 7 year 2023 reviewed the

charges and fees for various government

documentation and services.

Judge Mugambi issued orders suspending

new charges for passports, marriage

certificate and ID card issuance.

The Judge issued orders following a

petition by filed by another aggrieved

applicant based within Nakuru County

a surgeon Magare Gikenyi.

The petitioner Fredrick Bikeri through

his team of lawyers led by Danstan

Omari stressed that there was no public

participation with major stakeholders

prior to the gazette notices.

In court documents filed before court

the applicant said that the financial

burden imposed by revised charges may

result in a denial of essential

government services to those who are

economically disadvantaged.

The Court gave directions after

perusing the application where the Judge

reminded the petitioner that a similar

application was filed and orders

issued, and the newly filed application

by Fredrick Bikeri will be mentioned

on November 29th for more directions.
